Brain diseases affect all of us. Nearly everyone knows someone affected by a neurological or mental health disorder. Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, stroke, chronic pain, depression—these conditions do not discriminate and can strike at any time, robbing us of our mobility, memory and independence. Even our sense of self.

More than one in three people worldwide will experience a brain disorder in their lifetime, and for most of these conditions, there is no cure. When we or our loved ones are faced with a diagnosis, we feel helpless—unsure of what to do or how we can make a difference.

But we don’t have to be.

At KBI, scientists and clinicians are working tirelessly to unravel the mysteries of the brain with the goal of developing new treatments—and even cures—for devastating brain diseases. Every day, I am inspired by the breadth and depth of research being done here, and by the passion of our teams.

One of the keys to KBI’s success is the seamless integration of research and patient care. Across UHN, discoveries don’t just stay in the lab—they move quickly to where they are needed most: the patients. We have the extraordinary ability to work with patients in the clinic to identify the unique challenges they face, precisely study these challenges in the lab, and then bring our discoveries back to the clinic in the form of new tests and treatments. This constant cycle of discovery and translation is how we accelerate breakthroughs that change lives.
